Pirarucu fish leather
The Pirarucu is a fish native to the Amazon, with highly prized meat. For this reason, its fishing has been regulated and organized to ensure the preservation of the species. The skins are a byproduct of the fishing industry that supplies the food market, coming from regulated farms or from fishing carried out by riverside populations in a sustainable manner, controlled by government agencies and NGOs dedicated to preserving the species.
Sustainable management of Pirarucu is authorized from August to the end of November each year, and fishing is prohibited during the remaining months. Communities have a quota allowed by IBAMA for fishing, which is carried out using correct and authorized equipment and techniques. The country's meatpacking plants buy 90% of the fish, which are skinned (in compliance with health issues) and only then are the skins sent to tanneries, which will handle and care for each piece.
